Cigars after dental work?

I’m a bit miffed. After several years of dental neglect (re: not going for regular check-ups), my dentist told me I had three cavities. Yesterday, he put fillings in and my mouth is still sore this morning.

I really, really wanted a cigar last night. Anyone have an idea of when I can light up again? I’ve never had dental work like this before.

Zakira Khan is one of the best doctors in Chicago

If you’re looking for a kind, compassionate, knowledgeable doctor, I suggest Zakira Khan on 1631 N. Halsted St. in Chicago.

Her team approach — she works with her son, another doctor — is second to none. She takes care of her patients (I was speaking with one of them in the waiting room) and is actually courteous. Not only did she accept me as a walk-in when I was rudely booted out by Dr. Ravi Badlani, but when I told her I didn’t have a checkbook on me and that I would have to run to the ATM, she told me not to worry about it. “Just pay next time,” she said.

Zakira Khan is the best.

Ravi Badlani is the worst doctor in Chicago

Dr. Ravi Badlani is everything you don’t want in a doctor. He is rude, extremely unprofessional, uncompassionate and discourteous.

I was referred to Dr. Badlani through the Ravenswood Physicians Associates in Chicago, of which he is a member. After my initial review, I was told by Dr. Badlani (who was 10 minutes late in even showing up) that he would be with me in a minute. 15 minutes later, he finally was in to see me.

Now, if you read my last post, you’ll know I’ve undergone a traumatic life change, and I was mainly looking for a referral to see some sort of therapist. Not only did he not discuss this, but he proceeded to effectively scold me about my medical history. When I brought up the fact he was late for the appointment, Dr. Badlani closed my medical file and proceeded to kick me out of the office after saying, “I don’t think I can work with you.” (If this has ever happened to you before, please let me know!)

Dr. Ravi Badlani is the worst doctor in Chicago. If you’re looking for a physician, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Rest In Peace: Adam Honigman (1954-2007)

My father, Adam Honigman, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16.

Ouch! Macy’s slashes outlook for quarter after profits drop 77 percent

Macy’s should be reconsidering its move to Chicago after profits for the second quarter fell a resounding 77 percent. But while profits went up at a mere 13 cents per share, they’re fretting over this quarter’s profits, and they reduced their profit expectations to as low as five cents per share.

They should have left it as Marshall Field’s, but is this an omen?

Chicago Epicurean: Orion Cooker recipes

I’ve recently been receiving a lot of traffic from folks looking for my Orion Cooker review or Orion Cooker recipes after my first Chicago Epicurean post about the cooker.

So, I’ve taken the liberty of posting some recipes from the Orion Cooker site. Enjoy!

Hush Yo’ Mouth Baby Back Ribs

Baby Back Ribs (1-6 racks)
Cayenne Pepper (1 tsp)
Orion’s Dry Rub Garlic (2 cloves)
Apple Cider Vinegar (1 cup)
Salt (to taste)
Ketchup (1 cup)
Mustard (5 tbsp)

Remove the ribs from the package, rinse, and pat dry. Apply Orion’s Dry Rub evenly. Affix the ribs to the rib hangers and place in the cooker. Then, fire up your Orion Cooker ™ and cook for 1 hour 15 mins*, or until done. Best if cooked with mesquite chips.

Barbecue Sauce (optional): Mix vinegar, ketchup, and mustard until it’s a light orange color. Add the cayenne pepper, garlic, salt and Tabasco sauce to taste. Apply before and after cooking.

*This time is for six racks of ribs. For fewer ribs the time will be less—3 racks 1hr 10 mins.

Tequila Chicken Wings

20-40 chicken wings
Tequila 1 pint
Lime Juice 2 cups
Lemon Juice 2 cups
2 table spoons of salt
1 tablespoon Tabasco™

Take wings out of package and wash with water. Dry with paper towel. Place selected amount of wings in large zip lock bag. Add one pint of tequila, two cups of lime juice, two cups of lemon juice, two tablespoons of salt and one tablespoon of Tabasco ™ to the chicken in the bag. Marinate for 6hrs. Add hickory chips between the cooking cylinder and drip pan. Place appropriate number of grates inside of cooking cylinder, place chicken wings on grates. Place charcoal in upper and lower charcoal rings. Light and come back at designated time. Check meat for doneness. 20 wings 45 minutes, 40 wings 1 hour.

Wickers Whole Chicken

Whole Chicken 3-4 lbs.
Wickers Marinade
Honey (to taste)
Salt & Pepper (to taste)

Marinate chicken in Wickers for two hours. Remove chicken from marinade and inject it with more Wickers. Rub outside of chicken with a mixture of honey, salt and pepper. Place the chicken on the poultry stand and place inside the cooker. Then, fire up your Orion Cooker ™ . Cook for 1 hour 30 mins, or until done. Use a meat thermometer placed in the middle of the breast to ensure the chicken is thoroughly cooked. Great if cooked with apple or cherry chips which add a splendid flavor and crispiness to the skin!
