David Halberstam, a fabulous writer who wrote about baseball, the Vietnam War and the D.C. press corps, died Monday in a car crash outside of San Francisco. He was 73.
Halberstam was being by a graduate journalism student from UC-Berkeley after a speech
given last Saturday at the university.
He was always in the right place at the right time. He cut his journalistic teeth covering the beginning of the American Civil Rights Movement
in Nashville, Tenn. writing for the Tennessean. Halberstam covered the Vietnam War for the New York Times, winning his Pulitzer in 1964. His book, “The Best and the Brightest,” may have have convinced many readers that the war was unwinnable.
I recommend checking out “The Best and the Brightest”, along with his other books.
