University presidents mum on race in wake of VT massacre

An interesting article in this past weekend’s issue of theFinancial Times cites increased hesitation by South Koreans when it comes to sending their kids to the States for a college education.

And why shouldn’t they? Reporter Song Jung-a lists shame and safety concerns among the reasons they may not send students here.

But as a kicker, Song reports, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said he hoped there wouldn’t be any racial backlash towards Koreans in the U.S.

Interesting point. While it’s important for university presidents all over the U.S. to issue statements of bereavement to their students, I haven’t read any reports of these administrators protecting their foreign students. In my opinion, they should issue separate statements protecting them and pleading with American-born students - and others - to not discriminate or injure any foreign students.

Check out this L.A. times column written by Gregory Rodriguez about how the massacre was a reflection on all ethnic groups, not South Koreans.
