Mark Cuban = Cubs savior? Should I care?

You’ll never really see me link to a Jay Mariotti piece, but his column in today’s Chicago Sun-Times brings hope to Cubs fans.

Mark Cuban, owner of the Chicago Cubs. Kind of has a nice ring to it, eh? If this happens, I think I’d have to start watching more Cubs games…

…wait, I didn’t just say that?

Chicago 2016 Update: Others catching on, but is the coverage balanced?

It’s nice that the Chicago 2016 bid is getting some national press. But if you read today’s Bloomberg piece on the bid, you can plainly see its one-sided nature.

Now I’m no rabble-rouser, but I’d like to see a dissenting voice or two. What do you think?

Media News: Armed with iPhones, Apple to offer movie rentals next?

Apple has reportedly been in talks with major movie studios about starting an online film rental service that may start as early as this fall. According to Mashable.com’s Kristen Nicole, a 30-day rental would run about $2.99, the film expiring with some sort of DRM.

Read about it here.

Chicago 2016 Update: Tokyo throws hat in ring for 2016 Olympics

2016 Update

Now it’s Tokyo’s turn.

Yesterday, JOC President Tsunekazu Takeda and Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara both submitted letters of intent to IOC President Jacques Rogge, the first formal step in the bid process for the 2016 Olympics.

With Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and now Tokyo as competition, Chicago’s chances of hosting the games may be looking even slimmer. Then again, Tokyo already hosted the Games in 1964.

Other possible contenders include Rome, Prague, Doha, Qatar and Baku.

Chicago 2016 Update: South Works developers seek OK for South Side retail, housing

2016 Update

A large tract of land on Chicago’s South Side is up for review by. the city’s Department of Planning and Development.

The land, a 530 acre space that runs from 79th to 91st street near Lake Michigan, is where the old U.S. Steel Corp. South Works plant once stood, and it’s now the site for a proposed 17,000 housing units, an extension of Lake Shore Drive and plenty of retail.

The space may be used for Chicago 2016 events, but nobody has approached main developer McCaffery Interests about it.

But it could be the perfect opportunity to make South Side improvements, anyway.

But enough of that. Thanks for coming and please check out some of my favorite blog posts:

The Bridges of Cook County – Here’s a piece I wrote for the April 2007 issue of North Shore magazine.

Here are all of my Chicago 2016 posts.

Some thoughts on the CTA, which were also run on CTAStories.com.

Site of the Day: TimSpangler.com (Tim Spangler)

It’s about time I included my friend Tim Spangler’s Web site as one of my “Sites of the Day.” Tim’s a good friend and classmate of mine and his site is starting to gain steam.

He titles it, “Confessions of a J-School dissident” and he is that, to say the least. Imagine a programmer in a room full of journalists. (Journalists – a group that can be semi-egotistical – are afraid of programmers, really.) So he has some crazy thoughts that go through his head.

Thing is, he really is a journalist, as much as he doesn’t want to admit it. He can write up a storm and he offers up good content for Web entrepreneurs, programmers and some cool videos. To top it off, Tim Spangler is giving away free .edu links to anyone who writes a review of his blog.

Go give it a read!

iPhone to be released on June 29

For all of you Apple geeks, your iPhone finally has a release date: June 29.

Hmm, my Motorola Razr v3xx has been freezing lately. Good thing I have a warranty for it. (It’s also a good thing I’m on an AT&T plan…)

Check out Kristen Nicole’s Mashable.com piece on it here.

(NOTE: You can view all of the iPhone ads here.)

Site of the Day: ToddAnd.com (Todd Andrlik)

I’ve been checking out Todd Andrlik’s site, Todd And, for the last week or so. Andrlik is a Chicago-based Marketing and PR wiz.

He recently posted his first Power Profile, an interview with Darryl Ohrt of Brand Flakes for Breakfast, a site for marketing managers.

While only some of the marketing content is useful to me, I’ll check out his media and social marketing posts.

The other stuff up on Andrlik’s site is pretty cool, too. He’ll post amusing videos and photos that work well with his content. I recommend at least taking a look at his site.

Chicago 2016 Update: Chicago’s security status expected to limit costs

2016 Update

The cost of securing an Olympics can get pretty high, I’d imagine. But, reports Kathy Bergen of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago’s bill may be a bit less than that of other cities.

“You have a well-developed infrastructure already in place in Chicago, unlike in Athens, which was building as it was going, slapping paint on as guests were arriving,” said Bob Sikellis, managing director at Vance, a security firm with Olympics experience. “In Athens, you had police officers with rusty revolvers before the games, and updating basic law-enforcement equipment was part of the cost.”

Bergen also interviewed Doug Arnot, director of venues/operations for the bid committee for the Chicago 2016 bid committee:

“Given that Salt Lake City spent $320 million, plus $12.7 million to upgrade security at the airport, and that the 2016 Games are still nearly 10 years away, that puts the likely cost at around $1 billion to secure Chicago, should it win the right to host the games, a decision expected in late 2009. This would represent one-third of likely operating costs,” he said.

In all, it was a well-researched piece. And an interesting one, at that. The thing is, I would like to know some specifics about any preliminary plans that are in place, but that’s just me.
